Key Modules

Explore a curriculum carefully calibrated for modern global leaders. These strategic modules ensure a profound academic foundation alongside practical consultancy skills required in Aviation governance.

E-Commerce for Aviation Management

This module examines how e-commerce and digital technologies continue to transform the strategic activities of airlines and airports. Tracing the journey from the first airline booking websites in 1995 to a global online travel market worth over half a trillion dollars, it explores how digital channels are bringing airlines closer to their customers and reducing reliance on intermediaries. Students analyse how new carriers lead this agenda and how legacy airlines are adapting.

A new wave of technological change is reshaping aviation, and this module explores the innovations airlines and airports use to stay competitive. It covers collaboration between people and automated systems, the growth of technology-driven revenues, increasing flight deck automation and the challenges of introducing new systems into existing operations. Students also explore how games and simulation are changing the way aviation professionals are trained.

Sustainability is now central to the future of aviation, and airlines and airports face growing scrutiny over their economic, environmental and social impacts. This module examines how government policy, international agreements and impact measurement are shaping the industry’s response. Students develop the knowledge to build sustainable business practices within ecological and socio-economic limits, with a focus on measurement and corporate governance.

This core module develops students’ leadership and strategic management capabilities through the application of theory to real workplace practice. It emphasises effective, socially and ethically responsible leadership, and encourages a critical, reflective approach to solving management challenges. Students also explore the role of commercial planning in a digital age, preparing them for leadership and management roles across the aviation sector.

Sound financial strategy is vital to survival in an industry known for complex costs and frequent external shocks. This module develops a practical understanding of the factors driving costs, revenues and profitability at airlines and airports. Students explore financial statements, investment appraisal, fuel hedging and risk management, alongside the forecasting techniques that underpin strategic decisions on cost and profit.

Managers at every level are increasingly expected to lead projects, and this module builds the capabilities to do so effectively. Based on the Association for Project Management Body of Knowledge, it covers business cases, detailed planning, resourcing, budgeting, risk and project monitoring using tools such as Microsoft Project. Students also explore leadership, team dynamics, motivation and conflict resolution within project teams.

This module prepares students to critically read and evaluate research in their field and to design a strong proposal for their business research project. It builds a firm foundation in research philosophy, methodology and design, covering investigative techniques, data collection, analysis and communication. Students learn how research links theory with business practice and leave with a coherent, well-structured proposal ready for their final project.

Building on the Research Methods module, this project allows students to carry out an independent, consultative investigation into a real organisational or sector issue in aviation. Drawing together knowledge from across the programme, students analyse key information and data to make strategically sound recommendations. The outcome is a professional report and summary suitable for both academic and business audiences.
